Last minute packing!

Hello everyone!

Since you are all probably getting ready to go home for the holidays and pack your suitcases, I made a small list of things to remember to bring! I know some of these things are probably already on your list, but just to reinforce!

1. Umbrella. When it rains here, it RAINS. One of the little ones you can throw in your bag is a good idea since sometimes if it will rain or not.

2. Water shoes. These will come in handy for trekking around in the lagoons and/or rocky beaches.

3. Toiletries. Try to plan to bring enough for your whole time here. It's not that its impossible to find things once you get here, but trust me, it's expensive!

4. Layers. By layers I just mean a light sweatshirt or something, it really is very very hot most of the time but every once in a while when it rains it gets just a little cool.

5. Tent. Definitely not something you have to buy, but if you happen to already have a little tent, it may not be a bad idea to bring it if you plan on traveling around to the islands. It's definitely cheaper to camp than to pay for a pension or hotel. But if you don't have one don't worry, most camping sites also have little rooms or cabins to rent as well that are still cheaper than pensions or hotels!

6. A gift for your host family. Just bring something little that is typical of your hometown. For example I brought a picture book of Kansas City and candy that is manufactured there. It could even just be a little post card, or something that is used often where you live. This will also give you a good chance to start up a conversation and tell them about whatever it is that you brought!

This is all I can think of at the moment, but if your wondering whether or not to take something just let me know and maybe I can help you decide!

Good luck!
Emily

  1. Sebastian and I facebooked a couple of times, and he mentioned to not let any cuts and scrapes get infected. I assume you would suggest packing some first-aid products as well?

  2. Is the Internet in Tahiti all done wirelessly?
I was wondering if I needed bring an ethernet cord with me.

Will flip-flops work as water shoes?

Also, would you recommend packing a pair of jeans?

  3. Do you suggest spray sun screen or lotion? What has been the one thing you wish you would have brought with you from home?

  5. About the first aid supplies-I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to bring some antiseptic and band aids but also just make sure to ask your host family where they keep supplies like that if you need some. I'm sure you probably won't need much unless you run into a big problem like Sebastian's and in that case you'd need more than antiseptic anyway! (Not to scare you, if you just make sure to keep any cuts and scrapes clean you'll probably be alright-I was!)

From what I understood before I left, everything was wireless but my house had both wireless and ethernet. So I'm actually not quite sure! You won't need an ethernet chord for the University though, there you can access the wireless or use the library computers.

For water shoes I would suggest bringing something with more straps or a back since flip flops have a tendency to slip around or break when your in the water. I managed with mine but it definitely would have been easier with better ones!

I did bring a pair of jeans that I just wore on the plane and I actually did wear them a couple times while I was there. Every once in a while when it rains it gets cooler (but then again sometimes it doesn't!) The last couple months of my stay it was definitely too hot for jeans but I think you all are arriving in the rainy season so you might wear a pair but you'll be fine without as well.

For sunscreen I just brought lotion, but if you know of a brand that dries quickly (like if spray is better at that) then definitely bring that! It gets hot quick and sometimes it will just drip right off of you, so just be ready for that. (Sorry that was gross, but it's true!)

I think one thing I wish I brought was bug spray! The mosquitoes are unbearable sometimes!
